The Somalian Elephant coin series was first launched in 2004 and is currently in its 19th year of production. These coins are manufactured by the Bavarian State Mint located in Munich, Germany. The Bavarian State Mint is Munich's oldest company, with its doors first opening in 1158 AD. These coins are manufactured by the mint on behalf of the government of Somalia.

The front of each coin features the words 'Somali Republic' across the top. The coin's center displays the official Somali Coat of arms, which features a shield in the centre with a leopard on either side. Each leopard stands on an arrow. The coin's year of minting is printed to the left and right of the coat of arms. The coin's face value is located at the bottom - each coin has a face value of 100 Shillings. 

The reverse side of the coin features an image of an African Elephant eating leaves off of a tree branch. The sun and the savannah are located in the background, with a Baobab tree in the distance. The image of the Elephant is updated annually on this coin, which also gives them numismatic, or collectible value. The coin is part of the African Wildlife series, and the words 'African Wildlife' and 'Elephant' are inscribed around the edge of the coin. The coin's weight and purity are also located on the outside of the coin.
